What We Collect

Watch Something collects anonymous usage data to improve the experience. This includes which features are used, films swiped on and selected, slider preferences, streaming platform availability at the time of selection, swipe position within a deck, session completion and abandonment patterns, and button interactions. Each session is assigned a random session ID so we can understand the full flow from vibe selection to film pick. This data is tied to a randomly generated device identifier — not to your name, email, or any personally identifiable information. Each event also includes your browser's timezone and locale setting to help us understand regional usage patterns. We do not require accounts or logins.

Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to save:

  • Viewing history — films previously recommended, so we avoid repeating them
  • Watchlist — films you've saved to watch later
  • Recently shown titles — a cache of recent swipe decks for the same purpose
  • Display name — your name, if entered, for convenience across sessions
  • Device identifier — an anonymous, randomly generated ID used for usage analytics
  • Session count & first seen date — helps us understand new vs. returning usage patterns
  • Session data — temporary room information for multi-device sessions
  • Preferences — whether you've seen the intro overlay and other UI state

This data is stored locally on your device. The anonymous device identifier and usage events are transmitted to our analytics service as described below. All local storage can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.

Third-Party Services

Anthropic (Claude API) — We use Anthropic's Claude API to generate film recommendations based on your vibe selections and genre preferences. The data sent includes your slider positions, selected genres and eras, and previously shown film titles. No personally identifiable information is included in these requests.

TMDb — We use The Movie Database API to retrieve film posters, descriptions, and streaming availability. Your interactions with these requests are not personally identifiable.

Supabase — We use Supabase for real-time multi-device room functionality and anonymous event logging. Room data is used only during active sessions and may be periodically cleaned up. Analytics events contain only the anonymous device identifier, event type, and associated metadata — no personal information.

Amazon Associates — Watch Something is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. When you click a rental or purchase link routed through Amazon, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Names and Room Data

Names entered during multi-device sessions are used only for the duration of that session and are stored temporarily in Supabase to coordinate gameplay between devices. Room data — including player names, preferences, and swipe results — is not used after the session ends and may be periodically cleaned up. Names are never used for analytics, marketing, or any purpose beyond the active session.

Children's Privacy

Watch Something does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The family-friendly mode is designed to filter content and is intended to be operated by a parent or guardian. No personal data is collected from any user regardless of age.

Data Sharing

We may share aggregate, anonymized analytics with partners — for example, reports showing genre popularity by time of day, or how often films on a given platform are selected. These reports contain no individual-level data and cannot identify any user. We do not sell, rent, or share individual device-level data with third parties.

Data Retention

Anonymous analytics events are retained indefinitely to help us understand how the app is used and to improve recommendations. Data is analyzed in aggregate. The film vibes database (aggregate scoring data) is retained indefinitely as it contains no personal information.

Your Rights

Because we use randomly generated device identifiers rather than personal identifiers, we cannot look up "your" data by name or email. However, if you are a California resident under the CCPA or located in the European Economic Area under GDPR, you may request deletion of data associated with your device ID. Contact us with the device ID from your browser's local storage (key: ws_device_id) and we will delete all associated event records.

Your Choices

You can clear all locally stored data at any time through your browser settings (clearing site data for watchsomething.app). This will reset your viewing history, display name, and device identifier. A new anonymous identifier will be generated on your next visit.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
